Outfield Assist Definition

July 11, 2007

An assist in baseball is credited to any player who touches the ball before a putout is made.  Therefore, an outfield assist is credited to the player in the outfield who throws the ball to any base to record an out on a baserunner.

For example, if a fly ball is hit to left field, and the left fielder catches then throws out a runner at the plate trying to score, he would be credited with an assist.
