Apparently my rant about the Pottsville Maroons and the “stolen” 1925 NFL Championship has caused somewhat of a stir around these parts.
It has also shown that I was factually correct in basically calling 99.9% of Schuylkill County residents morons and idiots. Just check out some of the comments to that blog, most notably numbers 4 and 7 (numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6 are comments from that 0.1% of honorable Skooks).
Let’s get something cleared up, right now. It’s NOT that I think the Maroons don’t deserve to have their championship back. Quite the opposite, actually – I think they probably DO deserve it. They finished with the best record in the NFL in 1925, AND defeated the best college football team in the country in a time when college football was at least on par with if not a bigger deal than pro football.
The problem (and this, once again, is where I fall into the 0.1% of Schuylkill Countians that have half a brain) is that I can see that the title isn’t coming back, so I choose not to worry about it.
It’s really sad that everyone around here thinks that by signing a silly online petition, they’re going to make a multi-billion (yes, that’s NINE zeroes, a 10-digit number) -dollar entity come to town and drop off an 82 year-old trophy after nearly a century of telling the City of Pottsville to “fuck off” repeatedly. It’s just silly and ridiculous for anyone with an IQ greater than 10 (that means 11 or higher, Skooks) to think that.
When we have people here painting their vehicles, wasting what little money there is in this county on nonsense like that, it compels me to ask “What the hell is going on here?”
This is a county where nearly 11% of the population is living in poverty. This is a county where the median family income is less than $37,000 per year. This is a county where people have to drive 30-45 minutes, minimum, to have a high-paying job (and by high-paying I mean $40,000+ – unless you’re a lawyer or doctor, but those fall into the 0.1% of smart Skooks anyway), with gas prices soaring towards $4 per gallon.
What exactly is served by painting the side of a concrete mixing truck with an advertisement for the Pottsville Maroons? Is that ad, seen by exactly 17 people a month, going to make the NFL stop and say “Wow, we really need to go to Pottsville and give them that trophy. They painted a truck!” I’m sure Roger Goodell is going to stop concentrating on bringing in millions of dollars A DAY just to take up that cause.
What are we going to do if the title doesn’t come back? Are you going to boycott the NFL? I’m sure they’re terrified of that! I can just imagine that conversation in the league offices…
Commissioner Goodell: Boys, what’s happened here? Our revenue this year has dropped from $6,000,000,000 to $5,999,999,999.99. This is unacceptable. What could have caused this?
NFL Marketing Guy: Well, there’s this little town in PA that has been bugging us for 82 years about returning the 1925 championship to them. They’ve boycotted the league, sir.
Commissioner Goodell: REALLY?!?!?!? GADZOOKS! WE MUST RETURN THAT TITLE RIGHT AWAY! WE’LL GO BANKRUPT IF WE DON’T! By the way, you’re fired for letting this happen.
Seriously, think about it. What incentive does the league possibly have to return that championship to Pottsville? There isn’t any. That’s just how it is.
Even then, let’s say the title does eventually get returned to the Maroons. What do we do then? Throw a big bush party with all the high school kids up on Sharp Mountain to celebrate?
In the end, it comes down to this – Is the returned championship suddenly going to make people and businesses want to move back into the area? If you really believe it will, then you’ve got bigger problems than anyone can imagine.

Hey, Pottsville – SHUT THE FUCK UP!
Please, stop with this nonsense. PLEASE. It’s been 82 years. The title isn’t coming back.
You can have whoever you want sign this meaningless online petition, and it’s not going to matter. There has been vote, after vote, after vote on this from the NFL. There is ZERO chance that the Maroons are getting the 1925 NFL Championship back.
I felt the need to post about this when El Presidente came in this morning and showed me the following picture, which he had taken on his way into the office:

OK, I can tolerate online petitions. I can even somewhat tolerate the Republican and Herald covering this nonsense as their lead story for the past 5 years, because let’s be honest – nothing really happens around here anyway – but painting advertisements on the side of concrete mixing trucks? Let’s just say…wow.
Congratulations. You’re furthering the already well known fact around these parts that Schuylkill County sucks. You’re also furthering the notion that most of the people who live here are really, really fucking stupid. Great job, you’re letting the whole world know how much it sucks here. Thanks a million!
This entire thing is complete NONSENSE. There has been vote, after vote, after vote, after vote on this by the NFL. Every time, the outcome is the same. There’s a reason the NFL owners voted 30-2 against giving the Maroons the title back (and as such there’s a reason the only two owners to vote for it were the Eagles and Steelers). You would think people would get the hint…but not us! Not the idiots of Schuylkill County! FIGHT ON, WE SAY! Morons.
You can have books written about it, online petitions, the governor of PA and two NFL owners (one of whom, by the way, is the owner of one of the worst teams with one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL) speaking out on your behalf, and it’s not going to matter. If it were, it would’ve happened by now. YOU’RE NOT GETTING THE TITLE BACK. DEAL WITH IT. All you’re doing is wasting everyone’s time.
You’re wasting the time of Aaron Schimpf, who felt the need to write several stupid articles on his College Football Recruiting website about this when he should be taking the time to learn things, and not be so stupid all the time.
You’re wasting the time of the writers and editors at the Republican and Herald, who feel the need to write about this shit every damn day.
You’re wasting the time of the producers and anchors at ESPN and the writers at ESPN.com, who feel compelled to cover this shit because a of new book, written by a rip-off artist who feels compelled to not pay people for the work they’ve done.
You’re wasting the time of Governor Rendell, when he could (and should) be concentrating on more important things…like, oh I don’t know – GOVERNING THE STATE OF PA, perhaps.
You’re wasting the time of the NFL owners, most notably Jeffrey Lurie (owner of the Eagles), who should really concentrate on making his pathetic excuse for a football team better, rather than taking up the cause of a stupid little shithole of a town who supposedly won a championship nearly a decade ago.
You’re wasting the time of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who should be more concerned with how long he’s going to suspend Michael Vick for after his pathetic dog-fighting ass gets released from prison (I hope he gets the maximum 5 years, by the way).
Coming from a Pottsville native, who graduated from Pottsville Area High School and has lived here all his life, I need to say – please, just stop it. Seriously, all you’re doing is making us look more and more pathetic.
The whole world probably looks at us and says – “Wow, look at these losers. All they have to do down there is worry about getting back an NFL title from almost a century ago…when the NFL had teams in cities like Akron, Duluth, and Dayton. It’s sad that they need to cling to this. I can’t imagine having to live in that horrible little town.”
Yes, those of us that live here all know what a shitty area this is. We all know there’s nothing to do here, and that it sucks to live here. Do we really need to further that notion and let the whole world know? Can we not just accept our shitty little town and shitty little county for what they are, and live in peace?
The title isn’t coming back, folks. You can have the entire planet plus a few Martians and perhaps some Klingons sign the petition, and it won’t matter. JUST STOP. Those of us with half a brain are sick of hearing about it already.
